As much as I don't think the movie as a whole works very well, you have to admit that there's no fucking rational reason that Michael Shannon lost to Heath Ledger other than a little case of 'dying makes your acting better'. I call shenanigans.
Well, Michael Shannon is also onscreen for about six minutes. And I think the movie works well as an adaptation, but the screenwriter and director tweaked it. Instead of being about two mediocre people who blow their shot at escaping suburbia, it becomes a feminist tale of free-spirited woman thwarted by the patriarchy.
Also, Michael Shannon should have grabbed Kate Winslet and launched into a long explanation about how he is an agent of chaos whose terrorist agenda is meant to upset the forces of order, and he's also bin Laden, and...man Dark Knight does not hold up, does it?
